As you’ve probably heard, a tornado moved through Jefferson City on May 22. All staff are safe. Unfortunately, the Training for Life Campus was hit and suffered damage. All operations at the building have been suspended. Staff may be reached by email and at 573.635.1660.

“After an initial report from our engineers, we are happy to report that the Training for Life Campus is not a total loss,” said Susan Stegeman, SOMO President & CEO. “The investigations are ongoing and we will continue to share information as it is available. Until the total damages/costs analysis is complete, we won’t know the time frame.”

Updates on the #SOMORebuild will be posted here.

Volunteer opportunities will be posted here

Our Training for Life Campus opened in August 2018, serving current and future generations of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and is the largest such facility in scope in the United States. The 16.5-acre campus is located at 305 Special Olympics Drive in Jefferson City, and offers year-round training opportunities for SOMO athletes, coaches and volunteers from throughout Missouri, as well as health, dental, hearing and vision screenings for athletes. After the tornado damage is fully assessed in summer 2019, SOMO will provide a timeline for rebuilding efforts.

Donors are supporting the Campus project in a big way. Some are claiming naming opportunities at the Campus. Even our athletes are supporting the fundraising campaign. We need your support to meet our fundraising goals and finish building the remainder of the Campus (several outdoor sports fields remain to be constructed). You can also donate or pledge on a monthly or annual basis.

For more than 45 years, our athletes, coaches, volunteers and staff have not had their own place to call home. The Training for Life Campus will be their transformative place to train, compete and learn the lessons of sport and life that inspire all of us.

This is your chance to give our 16,000 athletes – and the thousands more who will follow – the place they want most, so they can keep giving so much to all of us.
